The Official Logo of the Company

Monolith Productions is a computer software company founded in 1994, mainly specializing in first-person shooter games including No One Lives Forever, Aliens Versus Predator 2, SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division, the Condemned series.

Their most recognized product is the LithTech Engine, developed by their subsidiary, Touchdown Entertainment, formerly known as LithTech Inc. This has been through numerous iterations over the years, first being used in SHOGO and Blood II: The Chosen, and later appearing in many games including both the No One Lives Forever games, Contract J.A.C.K, KISS: Psycho Circus, Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza and Aliens Versus Predator 2. The most recent version of the engine uses a DirectX 9 renderer and includes support for the Havok physics model, including the additional "Havok vehicle kit" which adds support for vehicle behavior. This is the version used by all four F.E.A.R. games, as well as both Condemned games.

Monolith was associated with the creation of the F.E.A.R. series, specifically F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon and F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, as well as F.E.A.R. 2's expansion, F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn. They acted as a publisher between 1997 and 1999, until they were purchased by Time Warner in 2004, thus ending their relationship with Vivendi Universal.

They are the current holders of the F.E.A.R. license, and have declared Vivendi's F.E.A.R. games to not be part of the series canon, thus creating the Monolith Timeline.

In mid 2012, Monolith announced their involvement in the creation of the downloadable games, Gotham City Imposters and Guardians of Middle-Earth, both of which released in late 2012.

In 2014, they released another of their new masterpiece game, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on September, making one of the best selling Lord of the Rings-based game in European countries ever since after F.E.A.R. [1] [2]

In 2017, they announcing a sequel of Middle-earth titled Shadow of War and was originally to be release on August 22. But was delayed till October 10. After it released, the game was also very praised. [3] [4] [5]

F.E.A.R. brand[]

Following the split with Vivendi, Vivendi retained the F.E.A.R. brand, releasing two expansions, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate, with apparent plans for a sequel. Monolith announced they intended to produce a sequel without the brand name, holding a competition where fans were asked to come up with a name for the new title; the title decided on being Project Origin. However, the increasingly mediocre reviews of Vivendi's F.E.A.R. games, along with lukewarm interest in the console ports seemingly convinced Vivendi (by this point part of Activision Blizzard) that their own sequel plan was not worth following through, resulting in Monolith purchasing the F.E.A.R. name back in September 2008 and renaming their planned sequel to F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

In January 2010, the UK edition of PSM magazine announced that Day 1 Studios was working on F.E.A.R. 3, with a planned release date in 2010. At least one Monolith developer was said to be associated with the creation of the third installment.
